We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Orientation and Mobility Specialist to join our team for Extended School Year (ESY) services in Palmer, MA. As an ESY Orientation and Mobility Specialist, you will work with students with visual impairments to develop their orientation and mobility skills during the summer months, ensuring they have the support they need to navigate their environments safely and independently.

Responsibilities:

  1. Conduct assessments to determine the orientation and mobility needs of individual students.
  2. Develop and implement personalized orientation and mobility training plans based on students' assessments and goals.
  3. Provide direct instruction to students in orientation and mobility techniques, including cane skills, spatial awareness, and environmental navigation.
  4. Collaborate with other members of the educational team, including teachers, therapists, and parents, to support students' overall development and educational goals.
  5. Monitor students' progress and adjust instruction as needed to ensure continued growth and skill development.
  6. Maintain accurate records of student progress, assessments, and services provided.
  7. Participate in team meetings, professional development opportunities, and other school-related activities as required.

Qualifications:

  1. Bachelor's or Master's degree in Orientation and Mobility or a related field.
  2. Certification as an Orientation and Mobility Specialist (S) from the Academy for Certification of Vision Rehabilitation & Education Professionals (ACVREP) or eligibility for certification.
  3. Experience working with individuals who are blind or visually impaired, preferably in a school or educational setting.
  4. Strong munication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with students, families, and colleagues.
  5. Ability to adapt instruction to meet the individual needs and learning styles of students.
  6. Knowledge of assistive technology and resources for individuals with visual impairments is preferred.
  7. Must be able to pass background checks and meet any additional requirements set forth by the school district.

Term of Employment: This is a temporary position for the duration of the Extended School Year program, typically running during the summer months. Exact dates and hours will be determined based on the needs of the district and the availability of the hired candidate.
